Dead Curious is a magazine for anyone curious about life’s biggest and most unavoidable question, offering an open space to explore what death means and how it shapes the way we live. If you’re intrigued by the macabre but can’t find a publication to indulge in your interests, Dead Curious is for you. We’re here to cover a range of interests under this taboo topic that people usually run away from, delivered with levity and playfulness to cut through the morbidity.
We dive into the history of rituals and traditions, the beliefs and philosophies that guide us through loss, the cultural and religious stories we inherit and reinvent, and the many ways mortality appears in art and pop culture. Even though death inevitably awaits all living things, there is currently not one specific space that delivers the content that Dead Curious offers.
MEET OUR TEAM
DAISY SANDERSON
Hey! I’m Daisy, a feature writer and podcast host at Dead Curious, where I explore the fascinating ways death shapes culture, science and the way we live.
I have always been curious about the darker corners of history. When I was younger, I became oddly fascinated with the plague, spending far too much time reading about plague doctors, mass graves and the rituals people created to survive it.
That curiosity never really went away.
At Dead Curious, I write about the unexpected sides of death: forgotten histories, emerging technologies and the people who work closest to mortality. If there is an eerie death story, a forgotten historical ritual or a cultural phenomenon to explore, I am probably already halfway down the rabbit hole.
THOMAS BOOTH
Hello, my name is Thomas and I am a feature writer for Dead Curious.
I am interested in the philosophical side of death, focusing on the absurd and existentialist. I am also interested in covering people’s experiences dealing with death.
My hobbies include playing guitar and playing pool.
ROBYN SMITH
I’m Robyn, writer for Dead Curious magazine where I mainly explore pop culture stories and death represented in film and fiction.
After studying at the University of Sheffield I often enjoy bringing my interests in gothic topics and fiction into my work. I’ve been obsessed with darker material, fashion and content since a young teen and am still fascinated to this day.
At Dead Curious, I write about death as seen in both horror films and also light-hearted content like sitcoms. I like to bring my own views and opinions into my articles and interview people with interesting takes on the topics I’m writing about.
Together, we can form a new opinion on your favourite films and even open up a new aspect you hadn’t even considered before.
POPPY RAE WILSON
As a feature writer for Dead Curious, I’m either diving into literature, researching some creepy historic niche, or going on a tangent about environmentally conscious funerals.
Audio-visual production and video editing is my bread and butter when I’m not writing, and in my day-to-day I love playing horror games or watching deep-dives into cryptids and odd phenomena.
Whether it’s a historicist interpretation of the gothic roots of Wuthering Heights and the Bronte sisters, or a look into what water cremation truly is, if theres something odd or niche, I’m more than happy to write about it.
THEA BURGESS
My name is Thea, and I’m a feature writer for Dead Curious.
It’s hard to choose which section of the magazine excites me most – every subject connected to death fascinates me in its own way. However, I often find myself writing articles centered around philosophy and art.
I’m also a keen filmmaker and enjoy shooting on my DSLR whenever I can.
JASMINE PEGG
Hi, I’m Jasmine, a feature writer, designer, and co-host of our podcast!
I grew up in Singapore and my fascination with death rituals became a personal interest as I’ve grown older, particularly with how differently the West treats death compared to the rest of the world. I know there are a lot of death practices that people out there might not know about, and sharing these perspectives has only opened my eyes to different ways of discussing mortality.
I’m also a multidisciplinary creator, dipping my hands into visual art and music as hobbies. I find that life is richer when you widen your horizons and step outside your comfort zone, particularly when confronting taboos or deep waters. I’m eager to write about any practice or experience that others might not be aware of – and I hope Dead Curious broadens your perspectives as well!
JAMES CAIN
I’m James, a writer and co-producer of our YouTube channel.
I think mortality is such an important concept, especially through the lens of it being a little spec on the horizon that encourages you to live life to its fullest. Not to be too morbid but, at the end of the day, death awaits us all, so we should try to understand it as much as we can before it’s too late.
I do creative writing on the side too – the most fun genre to write about is horror, 100%.
ABBY THOMPSON
Hi there! I’m Abby, a designer and feature writer for our magazine.
I’ve an interest in how different cultures around the world approach death, history and the arts.
